Civil War in Liberia
July 7 or 8, 1990, Paynesville, Liberia --- Forces from the National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL) take the town of Paynesville as they head to Liberia's capital, Monrovia. Responding to years of government corruption and oppression, in 1989 the NPFL launched a revolt against President Samuel Doe, seizing control of much of Liberia and plunging the country into massive civil war until 1996. --- Image by © Patrick Robert/Sygma/Corbis
