Civil War in Liberia
12 Aug 1990, Congo Town, Liberia --- Refugees, killed by government soldiers from the 72nd Battalion, lie in a culvert in Congo Town. Responding to years of government corruption and oppression, in 1989 the National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL) launched a revolt against President Samuel Doe, seizing control of much of Liberia and plunging the country into massive civil war until 1996. --- Image by © Patrick Robert/Sygma/Corbis
