Child Rebel During the Civil War in Liberia
October 1990, Monrovia, Liberia --- A young child, one of many coerced into serving with the rebel factions, is part of the escort of Prince Yormie Johnson, leader of the militant group Independent National Patriotic Front of Liberia (INPFL). Responding to years of government corruption and oppression, in 1989 the National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL) launched a revolt against President Samuel Doe, seizing control of much of Liberia and plunging the country into massive civil war. During the war Prince Johnson split from the NPFL and formed the INPFL; then he and his forces captured, tortured, and executed President Doe. --- Image by © Patrick Robert/Sygma/Corbis
